For anyone contemplating an overland trip into one of the world’s deserts, getting bogged down in sand can be a real worry. Recovery points are few and far between making winch recovery troublesome.
Sand ladders are not a new idea, having been proven time and time again by travellers around the world, becoming de-rigueur equipment for the vehicle.
‘Maxtrax’ have redesigned the concept of the sand ladder using the latest material technologies and design to make a highly effective, lightweight and usable product.
Supplied as a pair, Maxtrax have the following features :
- Super-tough engineering-grade reinforced Nylon construction. - 1215mm long x 340mm wide x 60mm high. - A ramp at each end for easy insertion under tyres. - 2 rigid support beams (to bear the weight of a fully laden 4WD). - An array of rounded 'teeth' on the top surface - Large cleats on the bottom surface (to provide stability). - Anchor holes at each corner for securing to slippery surfaces - Six hand holds to permit easy carrying and positioning. - Designed to stack on top of each other - Two MAXTRAX stacked together are just 80mm high. - Can be used upside down as a shovel to scoop out sand and mud. - One set (two units), weighs less than 8kg. - Can take full weight of a large 4WD (Patrol/Landcruiser) in very soft sand and boggy mud. - They flex yet can still provide a firm base. - Can perform in -30 and 50+ degree temperatures. - Requires no jacking. - Gripping teeth will not damage your tyres. - Can be linked together to form a road. - Lightweight and easy to store
Maxtrax have to be seen in action to truly appreciate how easy and adaptable the system can be. Already proven in competition on the Outback Challenge Morocco, and in use by travellers across the wildest reaches of Australia, the Maxtrax system is unique.
- When forward motion ceases, get your Maxtrax out !
- Clear debris and obstructions from around the tyres and underbody components
- Wedge Maxtrax firmly against the tyre tread (in front of the front wheels when going forward, behind the rear wheels when going backwards)
- Clear everyone out of the way, and get back in your vehicle
- Engage low gear and drive gently, avoiding wheel spin !
- If your tyres do not grip on the Maxtrax surface straight away... stop, reposition and try again.
- The Maxtrax ramps should be pulled underneath the tyres, allowing you to gain grip as they dig in.
- Once the tyres regain traction, maintain your momentum until you reach firm ground.
- Send your passenger back to the sand or bog to pick up your Maxtrax !
