Wow.....

What a couple of months.......

I am currently siting in a motor way services in Germany with a laptop that is about to die ! lol

I just want to say a BIG BIG Thank You to all of you for your support, help and good wishes :cool

We started building the chassis for this car on Feb 1st and worked like Hell to get it ready.....

I will list names etc later on..... But Thank you one and all

Results ?

I will give you a full listing when we get back our results are as follows

Day 1: Prologue 7th
Day 2: 1st
Day 3: Trophy day 1st
Night stage: 2nd (Philon won this stage)
Day 4: Race day 2nd (Steve Gittens won this stage)
Day 5: 11th (Broken fuel lines nearly ending our race)
Day 6: 1st
Day 7: 1st
Day 8: 1st

We won with 4hour 20min lead :smile

But the best bit for us....... We where also awarded the "Outstanding Performance award" This we are very very proud of :smile

We have had a great time and cant believe that we did it with a car straight out of the box and with a co driver who i never driven with before...... He does have great legs though lol

Full report just as soon as i come down to earth

Still cant believe the quality of the field racing and that we beat them by such a margin...... truly awe struck

Jim and Wayne

Ps: Chris sadly pulled out on the last stage a few km in after engine problems :sad

Re: Croatia Trophy 2011 2 years 1 month ago #107146

Croatia trophy this year was tough as ever, a true test for car, navigator and driver skill. We had our fair share of problems fortunately most of which we could fix and continue on with the race.
It was ashamed we had to pull out on the last day with an oil leak, the time difference between us and the Devon 4x4 crew was tiny up to that point!
Well done to Jim and Wayne, excellent result! :smile

The new Taurus was fantastic to drive, we had a few minor problems that we need to resolve, the biggest issue we had was being 6” wider than Jim’s truck! I’m in need of a new set of rims so i can make the truck 4” narrower for that event. The staun rims :erm took a beating, not one of them is round anymore despite 50 psi in the beadlock and 15psi in the tyre!
We broke the steering box when we hit a tree, so I’m now looking for something stronger, possibly DODGE pickup? Or 7.5 ton lorry?
The cromolly top link on the front end bent after a heavy landing with full power, so we’re going to fit an upper link with rose joints that are the same size as the lower links.
We also need a larger alternator too, the 100amp alternator we have been using will not keep up with the cooling fans.

We had some great racing, rubbing paintwork with Simon and Jim on a few occasions :wooyay I wish our Go-Pro camera worked on circuit day, our bumper car racing with jim was hilarious! :tongue

Well done Chris, unlucky that you had to pull out so close to the end!

RD2 of British Dirt is one-on-one racing!... no seperate lane nonsense for this round!!! you have 3 monthes to get it race ready! :smile 30th-31st July (New thread to start for that very soon)

Once again, well done to everyone who made the effort to event be there! let alone compete/finish & win!. Great stuff! :cool

Well i had a good time. great bunch of lads to travel down and go with for the trip. a big thank you to Simon, Mark and Ross for sorting the vehicle and keeping Philon and I on the road (or off it!)

Event was interesting, it started with a good days off roading crammed into 3 but things then improved dramatically with good road books and excellent routes to find/follow.

We had a shocker on the 1st road book day, but then running without a front winch after a couple of kms was never going to be easy!!! rest of the week went well and we even managed a stage win which was satisfying.

Some excellent teams out there and some not soo good! UK teams were by far the more technically orientated on the winching front but the EU teams were faster on the road books (to start with at least!)

Bowropes lasted the whole event which is more than can be said for some of the other types out there!

A cracking event overall once it got underway, certainly an experience and alot of fun and hard work.

If anyone is thinking of going with a td5 in the future 1 l/km of road book would be a good fuel consumption planning figure!

We also struggled to keep things cool when the radiators packed with mud. We paid the guys at the car wash extra to clean the radiators out, most days we found the bottom half of the radiator packed with mud. We also did a bit of duck tape engineneering to keep some of the mud away from the radiator.

when the radiators were clear of mud we did'nt have any problems!

Tim needs to fit the largest oil coolers he can fit within the engine bay for the engine and autobox. The deral coolers are too restrictive and not big enough, you need to use Setrab or Mocal coolers with Pacet or Spal fans.

If the autobox temperatures go over 120 degrees c. you need to slow down! anything above 120 you start to harden seals and clutch packs start to warp.

I have to say we were impressed with the Bowrope too!

we averaged about 2 mpg!
