110 Double Cab Facelift

110 Double Cab Show VehicleTaking a standard vehicle and transforming it into a head-turner is something Devon 4x4 have been doing for many years, so when the new 'works' truck arrived on the forecourt, it was a fair bet that it would be getting the Devon treatment before too long.

The vehicle arrived as a factory-spec 2003 Defender 110 Double Cab XS, so it already had a few creature comforts such as electric windows, half-leather seats and air conditioning but that was never going to be enough for the Devon 4x4 team.

This article outlines the main modifications to the vehicle :

Power Upgrade

Extra power and much needed torque for towing is provided by a Jeremy Fearn Intercooler and a Dastek Power Plug chip.  The 110 gets used regularly for towing vehicles and the massive power / torque benefits from the combination make the whole operation very civilised.   A D44 EGR replacement kit ensures the engine can breathe properly, whilst a modified centre exhaust section gives the vehicle a throaty engine tone.

On the ground

The standard factory alloys have been replaced with the unmistakable Mach 5 wheels.  These carry the distinctive Kumho KL71 tyres.  The 33x12.50 R 15 tyres give the vehicle a wide, comfortable stance on the 8x15 powder-coated rims.

Suspension

It wouldn't be a Devon 4x4 vehicle without a performance suspension package.  Old Man Emu springs and dampers all round give an incredibly stable platform for the vehicle and help to keep everything steady when towing.  An OME steering damper compensates for the larger tyres.

Protection

Up front, the vehicle is fitted with an ARB bumper and bar in black to complement the factory-fit side steps.  Steering is covered by an aluminium steering guard.

Lighting

Uprated IPF headlight units are complemented by a pair of long range ARB XS spots on the front of the vehicle.

Drivetrain

The drivetrain of the double cab has been left completely standard other than the fitment of a GKN overdrive.  For motorway crusing and for towing, the Overdrive makes a massive difference to performance and fuel economy.

External Styling

The front wings are covered with a pair of natural aluminium chequer plate protectors, whilst the back of the vehicle features a D44 sports hoop. The finishing touch is suppliedby a D44 side vent in silver.
