Title: New A.R.T buggy
Post by: A.R.T Offroad on November 24, 2009, 21:20:38
The time has come to replace the mitsimog. New spaceframe has been designed to msa standard and will contain a 480bhp LS3, 4 speed auto, atlas 2 speed t-box and custom axles.
On 44" boggers and portals frame is 1950mm tall and has 650mm under the belly plate

Oh and very bling doors ;D ;D ;D

There are still a few bars to be added inc roof cross, some photos from today

You absolute tart!!!!

Lovely frame, though - very economic use of tube. IMHO it is an exceedingly elegant design. I assume there's suspension mounts to add??? What about a cross brace in the roof and belly? Are you going to go all out and make the engine and gearbox structural?

Isn't running it without a rear axle going too far in the weight saving stakes??   ;) ;) ;) ;)

Progress is abit slow at the moment, still awaiting alot of parts to arrive to get the main componants mounted. After waiting an extra 3weeks i was finally able to pick the gearbox up on christmas eve and start on the upper chassis rails. The centre winch is now mounted. Rear winch and coilovers are mocked up. Hopefully we should have the bulk of the parts in the next couple of weeks.

A few photos for now  :)

A few photos from today, work started on the portal boxs now the cnc is free, these are machined from high strength steel plate, also started on the back axle and suspension, both front and back will be 4 link using johney joints.

Theres still a couple of mil to come of all surfaces, will hopefully be able to get it back on the machine in the next couple of days and get some more pics up. As for the gears, we have priced up to have them made but as i have a stock of 404 axles which have very high quality gears in we will use these for the time being to keep costs down.

There is no need to use other but mog axles are becoming harder to find and the cost of them is rising, we have a few on the shelf so will use these until we cant find anymore or the cost of the axles is greater than having the gears made.

Simon, ever thought of becoming a comedian, as that is the best joke I have heard this year. I think he is aiming for the second round of the XTC, but I am sure he will confirm himself when he logs on.

The total width will be 2150mm, it does look wide but is acturely narrower than the old truck, we've pushed the king-pins as far out as possible to get the full 50 degree of steering with the 44's on.

Whats the winch then?  some kind of hub reduction gear modified into a winch taken off a hydrostatic drive?

had an interesting chat with rob today. there are some big plans with this rig.

i like it when your talking to some one and they say "at the moment"

especially when its followed by

"at the moment it has 500 horse power"

did make me chuckle

It'll need a few ponies to make those 44's go fast!...  It'll also be interesting to see how all that weight of the axles and wheels handles going fast over rough ground...

The winch is something we've been working on for a little while, cant tell you much more at the moment apart from it will be rated at 235ft/min with 7000kg on the hook, and the drum is 14" wide by 10.5" diameter.

For the faster events we will run a smaller tyre, maybe 39-40". Im sure 500hp will light the 44's up nicely though ;D

no doubt about that! my tiny 170BHP V6 lights the 38" boggers up no trouble...

I guess we really don't know what XTC is going to evolve in to... hopefully they can find the right venues and lay them out to make it interesting enough for these types of vehicle...

Beautiful work though Rob, can't wait to see the finished vehicle.

Ive had to put the new truck to one side for the past couple of months due to the amount of work we've had, but it will be reappearing very shortly and more build photos will follow.

How did you find the challenge at Kirton, loved watching the tyre vid.

Alot easier than the one we have just done at Clyro.  The car is set up to compete in a place such as Kirton, therefore I had an easier ride as the winch bitch. Too easy according to sum, that I actually fell asleep near the end of the day.  The tyre section was something else tho, there is only one word I can think of to describe the tyre run "OSUM" ;D ;D ;D.

I have helped Rob with this car for a couple of years, but never had the chance to ride in it during an event.  A ride in this machine is another level up from watching it, can't wait for the new truck & lets hope I get to have a ride in it or even a drive!!!!

I can but dream..............

Taff.
