Hiya,

I am thinking of upgrading my Warn 8274 winch motor with a higher power version.  I currently have one of the original motors which i think are approx 2.5 hp.

A few people have recommended the Champion 6.5 hp motor at a bargain £95 plus VAT on top.

I can't afford to stretch to the Warn 9.5 Xp motor at almost £300 which is also a similar power I think but was hoping somebody could advise if the Champion motors are any good if you have used them or even suggest an alternative to try?

It sounds very cheap at the cost and it may be fantastic but I don't know?

Also is it a good idea to upgrade the 8274 with a motor this powerful, i.e. will it wreck the gearing and mainshaft inside it?  Am i best to use the later standard replacement motors which i think were around 4.5 hp?

Thanks, any advice most appreciated?

Regards
Simon

Have just bolted one on mine, going to give it a good workout at the weekend!

not a sraight bolt on though, the bolts supplyed with the motor are M6 thread not the UNC imperial thread used on the 8274, the warn motor bolts are to short to swap over to,

I have also drilled a hole in the "can" and put a dowel in to locate the motor on the top housing as there is no dowel on the champion motor

Have done a few tests in the yard, this motor has much more power than a bowmotor and is much faster to, will see how it stands up in a challenge and will let you know

Thanks Guys, that is useful info to hear, 4x4bigstu please let me know how your shake down test goes with it, when you mention the M6 bolts are too short can you just use the existing imperial bolts from the old 8274 motor, is the motor approximately the same length?  Also not quite sure what you meant about the dowel modification, please would you mind clarifying this for me.

Thanks for your advice

As Shane said the motor performed well and pulled strongly, My mate chris who bought his at the same time failed, the earth brush overheated prob down to bad contact, and melted away from the can,

looking at the motor it seems to be assembled badly around the brush earths it looks like the screws are too long and instead of using the right length screws they had fitted 4 spring washers to make up the gap! I assume this led to the bad earth that overheated.

The dowel i was talking about is the one that locates the motor in the top housing of the winch i assume it helps the motor trying to twist when working, as well as the bolts!

The bolts alone wouldn't stop the motor spinning as they aren't located at the winch end, hence the dowel.
Sorry to hijack your post but does anyone have experience of the 5.6hp Bowmotor?

Been running xp for a while.
After it packed up & doing a bit of investigating it's fairly comon they don't like powering out, which with 8274's you kinda do a bit.
Mine has burnt windings & melted solder on the comutator. Bowmotors are copper braised & beefier windings.
Bit reluctant to fork out anouther 280quid for something that won't last.

A Wise businessman once made the following statement,

Unwise Business

It is unwise to pay too much,

But it is unwise to pay too little,

When you pay too much you loose a little money, that’s all!

When you pay too little you sometimes loose everything because what you bought was incapable of doing what you bought it for.

The common law of balance prohibits paying a little and getting a lot, “It can’t be done”

If you deal with the lowest bidder then it is best to add something for the risk you run,

And if you can pay that, you will have enough to pay for something better in the first place!!

Think about it!!!

How so very true! Cool

I've never had a problem paying out with the XP motor, are you using 24v to power the 12v motor?

I have used the 5.6 bowmotor for a long time and loved it never any probs and v fast. For this years Tay I put it on the back winch and fitted an Xp to the front cos everybody said they are better so I wanted to try one. Didn't have any probs with that either but it is def slower in paying out and winching in under light load than the Bowmotor. Under load didn't notice any difference, both v good and v powerful never any need to double line

we are currently using 2 x 5.6hp bowmotors on a splitpin 8274.while not as fast as a 6hp warn they are strong and last well if not abused.we have done 4 events with this set up including the tay. here we triple lined the winch and ran it to almost stall (trying to lift, cross large area of blow down trees)  and then carried on with the event.the winch, motors and plasma didnt break during the weekend

I took off my bowmotor to try this champion motor,

I wish i spent the extra on a XP in the first place rather than having bowmotor.

Got to say the bowmotor has been mega reliable, just does not seem to have the grunt of an XP

Thought I would try these champion motors, deffo more grunt and speed than a bow, but one broke Undecided

Could be just a rouge one who knows?

only one way to find out,

I will be using the champion motor at the De-Cider but the bowmotor will be carryed in the spares box just in case Wink

Hi Simon. no just 12v through a 12v motor, I never stall out either.
I love the power of the xp, don't get me wrong Grin & I believe that you get what you pay for Wink
But at twice the price, is the xp twice as good? I can't recall anyone breaking a bowmotor? (floodgates open Roll Eyes)
I can't honestly say that my breakage was due to a low battery, I don't think so. It started playing up & getting red hot when I was at home putting my ropes on for an event!
MDM, are you still on 12v & 12v motors? Wink
Stu, was your bowmotor 5.6 or the old 4.6???
Thanks for that drillmaster Kiss
