Grab an OS map and explore.

Bear in mind though, eventhough byways are legal 24/7 (unless there's a TRO on them), some folk (farmers, elderly, misearable killjoys etc) might not take too kindly to a convoy of vehicles trundling past/speeding past/shouting/door slamming etc etc in the middle of the night.

Near a far, you may find yourself looking down the noisy end of a 12bore.

Personally i love off roading at night. (and the day Grin), night gives a totally different perspecive to even a track that you may know well.

If you don't mind travelling, then Salisbury Plain is littered with RoW's, hundreds of them, and a lot nowhere near habitation.

I spend a lot of time there bimbling around.

Make sure you use a map (and probably a GPS if your map reading isn't too hot) as the police and wardens patrol day AND night.

Give me a shout if you want to meet up sometime there.

It's not just being miserable that causes farmers to get upset - cattle, pig and sheep rustling is a big problem in many areas and the sight of vehicle lights where they're not expected can lead to confrontations. Poaching is also an issue and getting mistaken for a poacher can, again, lead to a face to face meeting with someone toting a 12 bore.

There's also a problem with night hawkers, particularly where a lane crosses ancient monuments or battlefields where people with metal detectors steal artifacts at night

Close to military bases you can also find yourself being confronted by military police who will often patrol adjoining farm land for security reasons at night, stopping any vehicles they don't recognise.

Just be aware that your unexpected presence at night may well give legitimate cause for concern so if you do encounter anyone, best behaviour and don't go off on one.

Dave

I understand your concern about military establishments but you won't get any monkeys out patrolling around. They think they are above that. What you will get is Security Patrols, manned by MPGS. (Mil Provost Guard Service I think) who are ex soldiers who can't cut it in civvy street and join back up to stag on for another career. Suits some and not others.

as a member of the arm forces the military ground is patroled by both gaurds and the forces trust me when i was shore based i did it, there is a place in andover that has a big site that the army use and if you contact the base first they will give you permission to go on it but you neeed to keep an eye out for tanks and gun fire as in when the red flag is flying they are fireing.

easy on the bit about people not being able to hack it in civvy life there dave, some people dont like the way civvy's are so they stay joined to the forces. its a forces thing so you might not understand.

Stu , If you dont want any damage to your truck try the Fosseway & Ridgeway , Not quite WSM but not too far from Chippenham , Fosseway is about 12 mile long but can be acheived in a Ford Fiesta , (Dont ask)  Grin

Have a look here , Plenty of Laning trips planned all year round .

The ridgeway closes soon due to the seasonal TRO  Undecided , think it's this week in fact.

Like ciderman says, the fosse is open (although a little overgrown in places.... depends on how you like your paintwork)

or plenty of other byways open 365/24/7

or the 'plain. Grin

Nice to see your supportive of our troops there mate, the truth being they are off in Afghan putting their lives on the line for all of us. This leaves people like the MPGS and MGS guarding our bases... People like you seem not to appreciate the freedom our soldiers provide for them, lucky people didn't think that 70 years ago or I'd be writing this in German!

I was referring to the Plain. Only an occasional patrol from the MPGS who have no idea who should and should not be out there. I've been walking the dog close to a byway and wasn't challenged.. Just a nice smile and a wave and off he drove. As for camps near Andover where you can go play?Huh

Jase

He's not in the Forces Cheesy it sounds like he's in the Navy. As he WAS shore based. Grin.

Yours Sincerely

I am in the forces and i have a bit of time on land base and yes i am in the Royal Navy and just to add that is the senoir service by the way.

There is Tidworth army barracks near andover and there is a massive tank area that if you contact them before hand they dont mind you going and pitching up for the day and having a play, done it a few times with a load of us.

I thought being a pongo you would know this walfy  Wink Cheesy Cheesy

Crikey, don't know when you last did this, but the H&S police are all over the CCDA area now.

Strangely I come from Minehead and there are no legal lanes there now. There are lots of illegal lanes that were cracking a few yrs ago. Don't know where you're getting your info from Huh
