1.    This Summer (from 10-14 August), its Enter the Dragon in Sanya City on the tropical island of Hainan, also known as the "Hawaii of China." For the first time ever, see the thrills and spills of off-road 4x4 in this touristic city from Chinese off-road teams and our overseas off-road guests.

Apart from outdoor activities and its scenic sun, sand, sea settings, Sanya is also famous for its entertainment, culinary delights, shopping and golfing. Sanya beachfront is among Chinese Top Ten most beautiful beaches. For more information, please check out our website www.rainforest-challenge.com news update. The programme is subject to
changes.

2.    On the Malaysian front, for newcomers in 4x4, watch out for something new for you coming up in our next news update. How many times have you wished that you can participate in an off-road event, but your vehicle is not prepared? How many of you would just love to drive your stock-standard 4x4s just for the thrill and fun in a
competitive off-road situation? Yes, something is brewing up in the national motorsports scene in which you and your vehicle can come as you are - no frills, no modifications but just follow the rules on competitive off-road driving in a controlled environment. More of this later, but if you have a 4x4 and have that adrenaline in you for
off-road racing, you can contact us - we would like to hear from you.

2.1  And for those with upgraded 4x4s and the super modified 4x4 of RFC standard, no worries, you will have your show-time for action too!

2.2   Talking of upgraded 4x4s, well, we are pleased to inform that we shall be launching a series of simultaneous carnivals and roadshows for UMW Toyota this coming May and June in Sabah and Sarawak (East Malaysia). For our overseas fans, these are the Malaysian states of Borneo. For our East Malaysian fans, check them out these carnivals and the RFC upgraded Hilux to be held concurrently in both states from 22 May to 21 June in Beaufort (showroom), Keningau (Post office outdoor), Kota Kinabalu (1 Borneo), Kudat (showroom), Sandakan (Giant hypermarket), Lahad Datu (Sri Perdana), Tawau (MPT), Kuching (Premier 101), Sri Aman (showroom), Sibu (Gateway), Bintulu (Parkcity Hotel-
outdoor) and Miri (Boulevard).  All these will be announced in the local broadcasting, electronic and print media advertising and promotional blitz in Sabah and Sarawak. It's time to "get up close and personal with these 4x4s warrior breed" proven in the monsoon drenched jungle in the RFC!

2.2   RFC 2009 - by the Rivers of Babylon.  The year's most anticipated 4x4 event will take place in the state of Johor this year with Tourism Malaysia. Our preparations for our flagship event is on-going. D-Day will be on 5 December for opening ceremony and Prologue SS. Catch the action open to the public on 5 and 6 December. Check our website. If you would like to join us in any category, please feel to contact us.

3.    If you have any news to share with us or any queries, please feel free to contact us.

Best regards.

Greetings and best wishes to all.

1.    RFC 2008 DVD version (1 hr 35 mins duration) is out at last. Watch
the blow by blow account of the 2008 edition of the "Unfinished
Business." 34 hrs of incessant rain fell from the night of 5 December
right up to the morning of 8 December.  That's the ferocity of the
monsoon. The battle to reach campsite was a nightmare. The weather was
unforgiving as ever. The Pincer Startegy to take Terminator Hill in the
Twilight Zone had to be cancelled. Watch how the bravest of the land 4x4
daredevils struggle through the 2008 episode. Available from D44 Store.  www.devon4x4.com

2.    As for this year's assault on the RFC - "By the Rivers of
Babylon," we wish to welcome the 2008 returnees.

2.1   Max, Jacob, Joachim Skjold and Morten Dam from Denmark who are the
first Early Bird for this year, they don't need the number 101 for being
first, they already got their famous team numbers 135 and 132. "RFC is
in our blood, we return for new adventures, RFC is different every year,
so speak no more."

2.2   Sean Hameed from Sri Lanka will be back, and he will also lead
another team of winners from his selection event (names to be
confirmed). 'The no.1 off-road challenge/adventure event, we'll be
there."

2.3   Rod Caldwell and Bundit Samrongkanok @ Aun, will lead 3 other
teams from Wild West Group.  "The Thais are challenged to see how I made
it so well last year."  That's a good thing, keep that competitive
spirit up!

2.4   Marek Janaszkiewicz and wife Agnieszka will be at the starting
line. "Always in the RFC for sure."  Other Polish returnees will be
published after summer.

2.5   Andrey Kurdakov and his teams from Vladivostok, Russian Far East.
"We wish to relive our jungle adventures again, one time is not enough."
More Russians supporters are coming to see them at the Prologue SS.

2.6   Patrick Silvestri and Paoletti Paolo are the 2007 returnees coming
for action again. "One year's absence is an agony, we can't wait another
year."  They will be joined by Sandro Signorini and his teammates from
Spirit Offroad.

2.7   MMM @ David Metcalfe is ready to rock and roll. "This year will be
my 10th time in the RFC, that's something to celebrate."

3.    The newcomers so far are the following :

3.1   Sarawak led by Eddie Alvarado, the RFC official in Kuching. 6
battle-ready 4x4s in Daihatsu and Toyotas LJ 70, 3 competitors, 2
touring crew and 1 official crew. They are Mohd Syamaizar Ahmad, Lau Kah
Kung, David, Ah Peng, Octavious Jitam, Addie Nandos, Eddie Alvarado,
Laurence Baraw, Wilfred Sim and co-drivers to be confirmed. SAKTA
(Sarawak Travel & Adventure Club) is well represented this time.

3.2   Gianpaolo Giusti from Italy is eager to catch the jungle action.

3.3   From Pak Hans, Indonesia - "Pak Helmi (South Kalimantan), Pak
Cefiro, Toni Handoko and Pak Yogi from Jakarta are coming for action.
Supporters are also coming to see the Prologue SS."

3.4   More names to be confirmed after summer, from Poland, Philippines,
China, India, UAE, Korea, Bulgaria, Germany, Spain, Sweden, UK and
France.

4.    Congrats! Wojtek Golebiowski, the commander of Magam Trophy for
organizing the IX edition. We welcome the top three winners to RFC -
Robert Kufel / Dominik Samosiuk (Champion), Marcin Lukaszewski
/Magdalena Duhanik (First Runner Up) and Marek Temple /Witold Grabowski
(Second Runner Up). What type of fighting machines will they bring? Wait
and see.

5.    Now, for all who love to see their 4x4s looking even more "macho,"
well, you will not be disappointed, a new portal unit is coming soon
from Auto Research & Development (ARAD). It will certainly not only
protect the undercarriage from damage and will also give the vehicle a
less likely chance of being "grounded" or stuck in the ruts. That's
macho looking with practicality combined.  No, we are not talking about
the "Volvo axle." This is a new "bolt-on" unit with minor modifications
only. Less headache and you will stand to gain an increase of 4.5 inches
of ground clearance from your original specs. No need to change your
axle or bulky and extensive modification way of whole axle assembly.
Check out the story in our website www.rainforest-challenge.com

6.    Toyota Hilux Roadshows are on-going events in East Malaysia. For
those who have yet to see them, catch them at the remaining venues -
Kota Kinabalu (1 Borneo), Kudat (showroom), Sandakan (Giant
hypermarket), Lahad Datu (Sri Perdana), Tawau (MPT), Sibu (Gateway),
Bintulu (Parkcity Hotel - outdoor) and Miri (Boulevard).  The carnival
series ends on 28 June.

7.    New and existing 4x4 owners (production series) in Malaysia, watch
out in the coming months what we have in store for you. Time to rock and
roll. Thanks for those who have contacted us, no worry, everything will
be arranged in good time, we shall give you all ample time to join.

8.    Last but not least, we are very happy to note that our surfers and
fans have given us many valuable feedback and information, thank you for
your support! Thanks all of you out there from far and near for your
queries and making our promos in our website such hot items!

Best regards and I encourage all of you to promote off-road 4x4
activities from where you are (in your own countries), this is our
living out passion together!

From Sabah/Sarawak (Malaysian Borneo), to Sri Lanka and China and back to Malaysia, it has been a very busy month of June & July.  Our website www.rainforest-challenge.com is updated online, watch out for the latest news and happenings in Malaysia and overseas.

The Hilux road shows that hit "pick-up country" of Sabah and Sarawak (Malaysian Borneo) since May came to an end on 30 June, spreading across 12 major towns. What a marathon one month and two weeks it has been for the organizing team of UMW Toyota and Future Oracle. Apart from the number of visitors (nearly 50,000 in all the 12 venues) and new vehicle purchases, it was also an excellent time to network with many 4x4 enthusiasts not only in the two states but also from Brunei. See the pix and write-ups in our website www.rainforest-challenge.com, news update, Hilux at 1 Borneo and RFC Hilux carnivals launched in East Malaysia.

Sri Lanka, the Pearl of the Indian Ocean is an enchanting destination. With its lush mountains, ancient cities, golden beaches, rich blend of colonial influence and local culture, warmth and hospitality, it’s the place not only for holidays but also 4x4!  The Sri Lankan 4x4 came to RFC in 2006 and since then; they are always represented, albeit with different teams. But this year, "Indika and I are already confirmed of going, irrespective of whether we win or not in the selection rounds," said Navin Marapana (RFC 06 and 07) at the FWDC (Four Wheel Drive Club of Sri Lanka) selection round for RFC at Thulhiriya. Well, they won this first round! Read the full story and see the action pix in our website www.rainforest-challenge.com, news update, Sri Lanka 4x4 Action and Sri Lanka aka Island Paradise.

From the South China Sea, another 4x4 force is emerging!  Yes, this coming 19-23 September, it’s Enter The Dragon, in Sanya (Hainan Island, China).  Rescheduled from its August debut due to H1N1 flu pandemic, the preparations are underway to "unleash the dragon" on opening day this 19 September.  Apart from the numerous Chinese 4x4 teams, this inaugural event will be special, with the arrival of the first overseas teams, participants and press from Europe, Middle East, South Asia and South East Asia. How will this first China-Sanya International 4x4 Challenge unfold? Watch the thrills and spills this September, in Sanya. See the pre-event pix at www.rainforest-challenge.com, news update - Enter The Dragon, in Sanya and This Summer, Enter The Dragon.

Back in Malaysia, on the RFC front itself, the battle plans have been drawn to face this year's "By The Rivers of Babylon." This time, the "Battle Royale of 4x4" will be fought in the southern state of Johor in West Malaysia.  How will the event unfold this time around? Plenty of behind the scenes planning are underway for sure. Four more months to go until D-Day on 5 December in Johor Bahru!  The bravest of the land 4x4 daredevils and press from Europe to Asia are, again, preparing for this year's assault on RFC. Catch this year's Big Bang Carnival Opening and Prologue Special Stages in Johor Bahru on 5 and 6 December.  Also catch these 4x4 warriors in Kuala Lumpur from 1 to 4 December.

While waiting, have you got your copy of RFC 2008 DVD yet?  Watch the blow by blow account of the "Unfinished Business" of 2007 played out dramatically by everyone during last year's "Here Comes The Rain, Again" episode. 34 hours of incessant rain, you can't beat that kind of downpour, anywhere, anytime!  See the DVD section in our website.
Live Your Passion in 4x4!

We have an entry!!!! Just trying to sort the logistics of getting the truck there and do we take the challenge truck which needs a lot of work to get the fuel range and kit carrying capacity up to scratch or throw a set of axles, simex, cage and a winch on a hard top or truck cab 90 and send that over. Whichever we go for its gona be tight as it looks like up to 8 weeks shipping which wont leave much time!

Anyone else going? Got Container space?

It is also advisable to allow for a bit of space in the scedule; we had the car planned to arrive 3 days in advance of the event, but it arrived the day before in the wrong place (singapoure). This then meant we had to wait 12 hours for customs clearance in singapoure and drive 350 km from singapoure. We arrived in KL 2 hours before scrutineering.

If you manage to get it organized: Have fun!

Hi Steve, 4 weeks to ship,

That's much less than Ive been told and would allow more time to get stuff sorted. Something else I need to check on.

and you will be able to store all your kit on a well organised tray back.

SB.

Mmm, well organised being the problem!

The main problem I see at the moment with taking the tray back is 4mpg and only a std under seat tank. I need to get another tank in and run the truck on a rolling road to MAP the engine management and hopefully gain a bit more efficiency. I don't want to spend money on the rollers until I have built and fitted the (bigger) engine I intend using, so that's another job to do before we go. Would I be asking to much to hope for 8-10mpg??

Whats the score with fuel? Do we need to carry it for the whole event or will we have chance to fill up? What sort of distance will we be covering?

Also what would you be carrying in the way of Kit, spare's, tools etc?

What else should we be thinking about/preparing for?

Cheers.

the ship was scheduled to take 3 weeks (boarding from southampton), which turned into 3.5 weeks. So say at least 4 weeks to stay on the safe side. We took 3x 20 liter jerrycans diesel and the standard tank. Total distance is about 1000 km from memory, I would say you need to survive 3 days between fill ups, but this depends very much on the route. Check with luis what this years route will be. Spares, well take anything that stops you getting out of the jungle...

we used to have a 160lt tank plus 1 x jerry can, as Dan says you need to check on the route being used and make allowances for changes of plan, we ran for five and a half days before we could fuel up and more importantly buy drinking water, do NOT be tempted to run low on water to save weight.

We carried every thing from spare ring and pinion to water pump shafts CV's electrical spares and the list goes on, you must remember that you won't be able to pop down to your local LR dealer, I suppose the best advice is use a common sense approach and give plenty of thought to how you load/store your equipment.

Having watched the DVD from the last couple of years I am a bit confused since whenever they are doing any of the competitive SS's none of the cars appear to be carrying any kit at all (well no more than they would on a UK type like Manby). It would appear that you carry all your camping kit, spares and fuel from Camp to camp and then dump it to do the special stages. Presumably some of the transit sections are pretty extreme in their own right but there is a world of difference between carrying all that stuff competitively and just carrying it at a reasonable pace. Or have I missed something?

this is going to be a bit to the point

i competed in 2005  and had a fantastic time and a fantastic route

i went back in 2006 and set ss over the week the route was s**t repeat the route was s**t if i would have been competing i would have had a few issues with the organizers

to be honest if you put a car in a box and sent it to RFC the most you would be paying for a entry is £300 that's the local rate!!!!

it was a fantastic event and i still talk to people i met in 2005 now

last year the xmen where not used and the hole event fell apart and the negative vibes went through the comunity unless the xmen are reemployed the event will die

the guy that runs the event is full of greed(he held a 10th anniversary 3 years on the trot to try and earn more money

he has destroyed what i would say could still be the best event in the world

if i where you steve bin the entry to RFC and get yourselves over to dave medcalfs 8 day extreme in oz

Serious words from andy. I cannot judge how things are at the moment, but do know that some important people from the organisation are not there anymore. The years that I was there (2003 and 2005) were very good is all I can say.

So Steve, are you going?

Hi Steve,

In previous years 99,00,01 and 02 if a stage started and finished in the same spot or close by you were allowed to dump your camping gear, however quite a lot of stages were on route so you went into a stage at one point and exited further up the track once you had finished, then you continued on your way with all your gear.

I can't comment on Andy's views as I wasn't there that year but it is fairly common knowledge that there have been a few major cock ups due to the vagrancy's of the weather in that region, amongst these minor disasters was the need to leave the vehicle in the jungle for several weeks whilst the competitors were rescued by boat.

It is important to remember that this is not just a competition but an adventure and you will NOT find that any where else!
