Challenge 90 Rebuild / Rear winch mount and suspension mounts
From the outset, it had been planned to increase the wheelbase of the vehicle to 100 inches. This provides a more stable platform for the higher-speed events. After much discussion, it was decided that the least disruptive way to achieve this was to move the rear suspension mounts backwards rather than adding a section in the centre of the chassis and refabricating body mounts.
Moving the rear suspension backwards would hopefully bring with it some added benefits in the reduction of bump-steer in the rear axle.

First job was to take measurements, set some datums and remove the existing suspension mounts and clean the chassis.

The rear winch mount was originally prototyped on the build of our 110 trayback, and the opportunity was taken with the rebuild of the 90 to productionise the product. The winch mount uses a double-skinned design creating a very strong finished item.

In order to produce the winch mount, the chassis of the 90 was used as a jig to set the alignment of the plates.

The mount features heavy duty recovery eyes, and these are welded through both skins of the product.

The whole assembly was taken off the chassis for welding and finishing, ensuring the usual D44 standards ! It was then refitted to the chassis and welded in place.

With the rear mount in place, the rear spring seats could be refitted at the correct position, giving a 100 inch wheelbase.
